Croatia can trace its culture back to more than thirteen centuries – that is about how long its inhabitants have been living on its lands. Curiously, most of the important remnants of the various historical periods in the country have been preserved throughout the centuries and in spite of numerous outside influences from neighboring countries. From churches to artworks and even in music, one can easily find traces of the culture that is unique to Croatia. Just like any other nation, the lives of its people are almost always depicted through folklore and in its native costumes. Each occasion and festival warrants a different type of tradition, different clothing and different music.
Aside from a colorful culture, the country is also well known for its interesting traditions. For instance, Christmas celebrations in Croatia typically begin on the thirteenth of December with St. Lucy’s Day. It is a common practice to plant wheat seeds in a plate of shallow water. These plants are expected to grow up to eight inches tall so that by Christmas Eve, they are decorated with colored ribbons, candles and other décor.

Travelers are in for a treat when they visit Croatia. The country is full of interesting sights and attractions that will interest all types of tourists. In 2006, National Geographic Adventure Magazine named the country as the Destination of the Year. Croatian tourism is currently being marketed under the slogan, The Mediterranean as it once was.
Some of the most popular tourist destinations in the country include the historic center of Porec where the Euphrasian Basilica is located, the historic city of Trogir and the Palace of Diocletian among others. These places have been added to the list of World Heritage Sites that are protected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Other heritage sites include the old city of Dubrovnik, and Plitvice Lakes National Park. Croatia also features eight national parks, a number of pristine beaches and wildlife conservatories.
Croatia is a country that will interest all types of tourist what with the varied types of attractions offered around the place. Its government has divided the country into eight different tourist regions each one showcasing a distinct type of tour experience for guests. Historic towns, natural parks and sports destinations are all offered in the country.
