Zagreb
Cultural and Social hub of Croatia
Aside from being the largest city in the country of Croatia, Zagreb (Croatia) is the capital city of the nation. It is nestled comfortably between the slope of Medvenica Mountain and the banks of Sava River.
The city derived its name from “zagrebiti”, a common Slavic word that means ‘to scoop.’ The word is mentioned in a legend in Croatia which concerns a girl, Manda, and a city ruler who ordered the girl to scoop water for him because he was thirsty.
Zagreb, like the rest of Europe, is rich in European history and culture related physical structures and traditions. In a city as big as this, there are numerous museums that one can go to in order to learn much of Europe’s history. Relics and artefacts are housed in museums in the city. One known museum is the Archeological Museum which holds a collection of Egyptian relics and a display of the famous Zagreb mummy. Another museum is the Croatian National History Museum which holds a piece of the earth and humanity’s past, the remains of a Neanderthal found in a site aptly. The Neanderthal was given the name Krapina and was found buried along with his tools. And then there still are more museums other than those mentioned here.

The city has approximately 20 theatres and stages of both kinds—the seasonal and the permanent ones. It is here where one can witness the talents of Zagreb locals and the international artists invited to perform in the city.
Zagreb is also rich when it comes to musical talent and music in general. There is the Zagrebfest, a festival for locally created and produced pop music. Another event that the visitor should not miss is the ZagrebDox. This event is held to showcase documentaries from all over Zagreb, Croatia and some of the internationally made ones.
The city is also ideal for shopping. There are establishments like the A/C-2, Ilica that are frequently visited by tourists and locals for stuff they need and want.

Zagreb at night is silent, calm and tranquil. There are times where streets are clogged with people who are there to witness events and such held on the streets such as street dances and so on. The city is rich with culture, history and European entertainment for the young, the old and the family.
