The official name of this huge city, the second largest in Germany, is the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Hamburg (Germany) was given this name because of its past affiliation with the Hanseatic League. The city then was a free majestic city of the Roman Empire. Today, this German city is known as the gateway to the rest of Germany and the rest of Europe.
Hamburg (Germany) has a rich past of battles, wars and fighting much like the rest of the European cities. All the more is it rich with history as it was once the seat of a Roman Catholic bishop, Ansgar. It was not until the year 1529 that the majority of the city’s population embraced Lutheranism.

The city is situated on the south of the Jutland Peninsula, making other European cities an easy reach from there.
Hamburg (Germany) is blessed with a rich culture and the contemporary living that’s all about music, the arts, fun and life. It is frequented by many tourists because of its numerous museums—they have approximately 60 of them; it’s theatres—again, they have 60 theatres; and 100 clubs and venues for live music. Music and entertainment is what many tourists go for when they go to Germany’s second largest city.
Places that would most likely interest the first time visitor to this part of Germany would include St. Michael’s Church. The church has a tower that’s approximately 132 meters high. The 453 steps to the viewing platform are truly worth it as you will be rewarded with a magnificent view of the harbor and the entire city.
There are 60 museums in the city and each of which carry with them pieces of the city’s past. The thirst for knowledge curiosity of young and old alike will definitely be quenched by the professionals that serve as guides through the museums. Museums are the best place to bring the kids and yourself to if your purpose of going to the city is to gain knowledge about it and its history.

For the shopaholics, the places to be are Neuer Wall, the Jungfernstieg and the Hanseviertel Arcade. Neuer Wall is a street laden with fashion stores of popular fashion labels. The Hansviertel Arcade is where specialty stores and restaurants are at. Dining and shopping can combined in Hamburg (Germany) as well.
