Going through the Canals of Venice

When the rest of Europe boasts of its historical and aesthetic high quality, Venice rises above the rest of its counterpart cities by offering something, i.e. the canals. The general makeup of Venice is like no other. The entire city is almost literally on water. To get this into proper context, it is helpful for one to realize that Venice is composed of one hundred, seventeen pieces of land separated by water in an encompassing lagoon. The city became possible because of the four hundred bridges in one hundred fifty canals. Because of these connections, Venice comes alive in arts and culture.

For any person familiar with Venice, the city is impossible to conceive without the gondola rides. Gondolas are ornately fashioned boats. They are driven by Venetian men in stripped uniforms. The gondolas pass through the different bridges in the city. This activity is a couple favorite. This is so because the beauty of the city exudes a romantic feel like no other. What’s more is that, tradition moves couples to kiss every time the gondola passes a bridge.

Coming only second to the gondolas is the Basilica of San Marco or Saint Mark. The said cathedral is an architectural beauty especially since it successfully integrated the styles of the Orient and the West. Then, there’s the Piazza San Marco or the San Marco Square. Other than the cathedral within the plaza, there are also high end cafes and shops available for tourists. The Palazzo Ducale, also known as the Doge’s Palace can also be found within the square’s territory. It is a lot more beautiful than San Marco. The famous Bridge of Sighs, home of the myth of eternal love when a couple kisses underneath it, is actually connected to this former seat of Venetian Government.

The Canal Grande is, perhaps, the main attraction in Venice. This Canal is actually the central area of Venetian activity. It is lined up with gondolas on the water and magnificently done buildings by the sides. The most lively festival in Venice, the Redentore Regatta, is held at the Grand Canal July of every year.

In Venice, one may find himself/ herself in one of the sestieri or Venetian section. It may be by the station or the Cannaregio, the Canal Grande, the Santa Croce, San Pablo or Dorsoduro. Yet, one is directly assured of the fact that Venice is an outstanding tourist experience.
