Historical profile

The capital city of Macedonia is Skopje, which happens to be its largest as well. It is a fairly small country inhabited by more than two million people coming from different cultural races. Originally, the lands that are now included in the territory of the Republic are part of the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia. Different states and empires have ruled the area over the past several centuries but it was only after the Second World War that the boundaries of the country were properly established. To date, the young country is still experiencing some level of civil conflict as is typical with developing nations. The government is currently exerting a lot of effort towards completely resolving these issues. In spite of the political turmoil surrounding the country, it is still an ideal place to visit especially for people who want to experience a whole new kind of travel adventure.

Culture

Due to the diversity of the Macedonian population, the country is known to bring together several different cultures and is on its way towards establishing its own identity based on these influences. There are many languages spoken in the country but the official language is still Macedonian, which is part of the South Slavic language group. If you observe closely, you will find that this language resembles that of Bulgaria’s. Other languages spoken in Macedonia include Greek, Albanian, Turkish and Serbian. Next to Macedonian, Albanian is another predominantly spoken language with over twenty percent of the population using it.

In spite of its varied influences, Macedonia is still lucky to have a rich cultural heritage that is reflected in its literature, music and art. Various festivals showcasing local talents are held annually. These events exhibit poetry, films and music among other art forms to market the country’s attractions to the whole world.
