History and culture

Did you know that Dracula and Transylvania do exist in real life? That’s right. They are actually little snippets taken from the interesting history unique to Romania. Dracula was a prince who later became a ruler of the country. He was known for his independent policies associated with the Ottoman Empire. Vlad III the Impaler, as he was called, was known all around Romania for having a deep sense of justice although as a prince, legends have portrayed him as one who gives out really cruel punishments. This was probably the reason why he became the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

The country has always been known to be the site of many political meetings and territorial discussions. From the Romans to the Ottomans, Austro-Hungarian and Russian Empires, it seems that everyone has taken advantage of Romania’s strategic geographical location to convene various talks related to sovereignty.

At present, the country is still working its way towards redefining its national identity. Through various revolutions and political uprisings, it has managed to create a government that is a product of its people’s unified ideologies. Human rights are now restored and a multi-party electoral system is also in effect.

Traditions and attractions

The traditions that are in place in Romania are mixtures of different nations including that of Hungarians, Germans, Ukranians, Serbs, Russians and Gypsies. Yes, even gypsies have found their place in the country. They even have their own representation in the Romanian parliament as they are now considered the modern kind of exotic wanderers. Due to the mixture of cultural influences, the country was able to create a different kind of identity that brings together a little of everything else.
