Getting to Know Serbia
Serbia is a small country located in Central and Southeastern Europe. It is one of those fairly younger European countries that are starting to attract attention from tourists who are looking for a different kind of vacation experience. The country is definitely an off-the-beaten-track destination that is worth exploring further.
For such a small country, Serbia has gone through a lot. It features a history that is unique to its nation. And while it is still in the process of creating a national identity after being a separate sovereign republic in 2006, its culture already has a face – something that its people can be proud of as reflected in the country’s distinctive art, music and literature.
Historical profile
According to many historians, Serbia is a combination of an odd number of nations who have, at some point in time, claimed the territory as their own. The whole area is yet to be explored. Everyone is now anticipating exactly what this country is prepared to offer.
The general topography of the country is characterized by vast forests, rolling plains and mountainous regions. Just like other upcoming tourist destinations, it hasn’t lost its natural beauty to industrialization. The best thing about this country is it still managed to maintain its rugged appeal – something which may be attributed to the fact that it has once been a part of a different country so development in terms of technology hasn’t been maximized as yet.
Serbia has five national parks namely: Frusca Gora,Kopaonik, Tara, Derdap and Sar Mountains. The current government supports preservation efforts geared at keeping these natural beauties as they are.
If you’re looking for interesting history composed of heroic patriots, Serbia is ready to deliver exactly what you’re looking for. Throughout the centuries, the country has been associated with fierce resistance to whatever foreign rule happens to be in power. After the Serbian Empire, the country has gone under the control of different countries including Austria (Ottoman Empire). It also became a part of Yugoslavia under the communist regime. After several transitions, it was merged with Montenegro until finally it became its own independent republic.
People and culture
Serbia is inhabited by different ethnic groups. Majority of its population is still composed of native Serbs but there are several ethnic minorities in the country including Hungarians, Bosniaks and Yugoslavs. Majority of its people are Christians. For centuries, the dominant religions in the country were Orthodox and Roman Catholicism. Later on, Serbia began welcoming the Islamic faith with the Kosovo province having the largest group of Muslims living in the country. More than ninety percent of its population belongs to the Islamic religion.
The country’s tourism is mainly focused on the little native towns. The government aims to promote cultural tourism in the country by showcasing the traditions of its natives. Each town features a different facet of the diverse culture that Serbia is widely known for.
Aside from historic and cultural tours, the country also offers hiking and other mountain activities as well as spas and resorts where travelers can enjoy a more laid-back holiday.
