Discovering Slovenia

Europe is coming up with a lot of new travel destinations. Upcoming attractions are being introduced each season offering something new to tourists who want a break from the typical vacation pursuits. Slovenia is another one of the relatively younger member countries of the European Union that is rising to the challenge. Since its independence in 1991, it has been working towards establishing a reputation and a national identity for itself apart from the nations that have ruled it before.

History

The country’s culture was greatly influenced by the nations and empires that have claimed it as part of their territories. Throughout the centuries, ownership of the lands attributed to modern Slovenia has become part of the Roman, Byzantine, Holy Roman and the Austrian Empires. It was also once part of the Republic of Venice, and finally the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia from which it has gained its complete independence more than a decade ago.

According to many historians, Slovenia’s independence from Yugoslavia can be considered the most peaceful compared to other similar countries such as Croatia and Bosnia. Because it was also the most popular Yugoslavian region, it is currently finding it easier to transition from the socialist economy that it had before to the free capitalist market that it seeks to adopt. For a country that has gone through a lot of political unrest in its early years, Slovenia sure knows how to get back on its feet. The country is currently enjoying political and economic stability – things that you will probably be unable to associate with similar nations at this point.

Culture

While Slovenia may be considered one of the younger and smaller countries in south-central Europe, it is still curiously rich in a culture that has produced some of the best local talents in the world. It has introduced various literary poets and painters as well as architects who have been responsible in turning the country into the upcoming tourist destination that it is today.

Some of the most notable scholars that hail from Slovenia include chemist and Nobel Prize winner Friderik Pregl, philosopher Milan Komar, mathematician Jurij Vega and rocket engineer Herman Potocnik.

Tourism

The best time to visit the country is in September as the month offers great weather conditions for those who want to go hiking. The country is known for its spectacular mountain ranges so if you want to enjoy a different kind of travel adventure, try scaling the mountains and enjoy the rich natural beauty of this particular area.

Slovenia is located off the coast of the Adriatic Sea so those who want to experience a different summer holiday can very well do so along its coastal areas. Summer is also a great time to come and enjoy the water.

The country also features several different attractions. The cities and towns in themselves have been enticing the interest of their guests due to their unique architectural designs. You will also want to visit Slovenia’s Skocjan Caves – a system of limestone caves that are located southwest of the country. This attraction has made it to UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites list.
