The International Geneva

Geneva is one city that literally belongs to the world. This is so because it is the international seat of two hundred and fifty worldwide organizations. Yet, more importantly, it is the European home to the International Red Cross and Crescent, the World Health Organization and the United Nations.

Although the city is highly compared to France to the point that the French themselves would, in essence, consider it as a part of their country and their culture especially since it is situated southwest of the Lake of Geneva where the surrounding territories are all French, Geneva, in its placid nature, is a different experience altogether.

The capital of the Swiss Confederation Canton which is also named Geneva, Geneva is centered by both the beautiful snow capped Jura and the Alps. The entire area is called the Rhône Valley. The city is the second largest in Switzerland and is studded by natural attractions like clear sights of the Alps and the Mont Blanc, which deviates from the usual nightlife offerings of other cities in Europe.

Other than the natural wonders all set for any visitor to behold at sight in Geneva, there are still other attractions that could directly be experienced within the city itself. First among these places is Geneva’s fountain icon, the Jet d’Eau. Second comes the different parc est jardin (parks and gardens) that are characterized by their outstanding cleanliness and safety. In the Avenue de France is the Parc Mon-Repos and in the Rue de Lausanne is the Le Perle du Lac which is at the near left of the Jardin Botanique. From the Quai Gustave-Ador, one may set off a ferry to explore the Lake Geneva. By the lake are parks like the Parc la Grange, famous for its roses, and the Parc des Eaux-Vives. Another notable attraction is the Palais de Nations located within the Parc de l’Ariana.

Geneva is also home to the Les Pâquis, the one place of robust high living. Although the direct translation of the district’s name is The Pasture, it is in no way living up to its name. Les Pâquis is the arena of haute de couture, cafes, banks, restaurants and the works. Among the places of interest in the area are the Hôtel des Etrangers, the Rotonde quais Pâquis, the Eaux-Vives, the Pont du Mont-Blanc, the façade des Pâquis, the Hôtel National and the Kursaal.

With all of these beautiful, functional and nature friendly places of interest in Geneva, the city is indeed worth the visit and the appreciation.
