London
A Queenly Welcome to London
It is never wrong to expect highly of a European city that holds claim to being the largest and the most culturally diverse. This city is none other than the capital of the United Kingdom of England and Scotland, London. True enough, with a territory of six hundred and twenty square miles and a population that speaks two hundred different languages other than Briton English, London must have a lot in store.
Following a local renewal of vibrant spirit, London has gone through a holistic renewal of all of its world caliber galleries and museums. As such, the Royal Opera to the British Museum has a changed look without compromising the traditional trademarks of the said institutions.
The other equally well known landmarks in London continue to magnetize a big number of tourists within its walkways. A visit to the following places will make a visit to London worthy: the Westminster Abbey (the famous Poet’s Corner, the resting place of England’s greatest literary figures); the Big Ben; the Buckingham Palace (in front of the presently used royal palace, one may feast on the slow, careful and colorful assembly of the Royal Guards); the Tower of London; and St. Peter’s Cathedral.
As in its other European counterparts, London also holds several parks like the Hyde, Green, St. James’s, Hampstead and Richmond Parks. The city also offers a wide array of British culture experiences in its shopping, music, art and gastric scenes. Harrods offer a high-end shopping experience that comes in contrast to the shopping market lined streets of Greenwich, Portobello Road and Camden. Nightlife in London displays their modern musical prowess. Yet, what characterizes the cities clubbing scene is the fact that it has a wide array of choices that even different sexual preferences are accommodated.
Although both literary and philosophical readership is pretty much in a wide array in Europe, London, expectedly, has the most number of bookshops that sell reading materials written or translated in English, the language that comes closely to the idea of an international lingua franca. These bookshops actually include Murder One, a store that sells fiction dealing with anything avant-garde, and Forbidden Planet, a futuristic fiction store. Both are found in Denmark Street. The Foyles bookstore is also located in London. What separates this bookshop from the rest is the fact that it is actually the largest in the world.
Indeed, London has pretty much everything for everyone, especially tourists.
